Caroline Wozniacki

Caroline is currently the only Danish woman in the Top 400 on the WTA Tour, and more importantly the Top 15. The stunning 18 year old has won many fans amongst tennis purists for a solid game combining excellent baseline play and a superb two handed backhand shot with few net approaches and few unforced errors. She is one of the biggest female sports stars in her home country and has appeared in several magazines and T.V adverts including Sony Ericsson.

 

 

 

 

Early Life

Caroline Wozniacki was born in Odense, Denmark on July 11th, 1990 to Polish parents. Her parents, Piotr and Anna, were both been professional athletes. Anna played volleyball for the Polish national team, and Piotr was a professional soccer player and it was while he was based in Denmark playing for B1909 in Odense that Caroline was born. She has a older brother, Patrik, who is also a professional soccer player who currently plays in Denmark for Boldklubben Frem.

Caroline was interested in a number of sports from a young age including swimming and soccer. At the age of seven she began playing tennis with her father and brother at the tennis club of their home town Køge. Caroline began playing tournaments while still studying at school and won her first singles title in the Osaka Mayor’s Cup in Japan at 14 years of age in October 2004. She went on to win several junior tournaments including the 2006 Wimbledon girls' singles tournament and the 2005 Orange Bowl tennis championship.

WTA Career

Caroline made her debut on the Sony Ericsson WTA Tour at the Cincinnati Western & Southern Financial Group Women's Open in July, 2005, losing to the top-seeded and eventual champion Patty Schnyder in the first round.

In 2006, she was the first seed at the Australian Open (junior girl's singles), but lost in the final to eight-seeded Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova of Russia in three sets. She was seeded second with Anna Tatishvili in the doubles-tournament, but the pair was knocked out in the semi-final by the French-Italian pair Alizé Cornet and Corinna Dentoni, who were seeded eighth.

In February, 2006, in Memphis, she reached her first WTA Tour quarterfinal, beating Kristina Brandi and Ashley Harkleroad in the first two rounds before losing to third-seeded Sofia Arvidsson of Sweden. Before winning the Wimbledon girls title, Wozniacki won the Liverpool International Tennis Tournament beating Ashley Harkleroad in the semi-finals.

In August 2006 she reached another WTA Tour quarterfinal, this time at the Nordea Nordic Light Open in Stockholm. She defeated top 100 players Iveta Benešová and Eleni Daniilidou before falling to eventual champion Jie Zheng of China. Her first senior title came shortly after on October 29, 2006, when she won the $25,000 ITF-tournament in Istanbul by beating Tatjana Malek 6–2, 6–1 in the final.

Caroline started the 2007 season competing on the ITF Circuit. After winning titles in Ortisei, Italy and Las Vegas she obtained a wild card for the 2007 Indian Wells Masters main draw. There she made her WTA Tier I-debut but was knocked out in the 2nd round by the Swiss former world # 1 Martina Hingis, 6–1, 6–3. Her best WTA Tour performance came in Tokyo in October. There she made her first career semi-final but was defeated by Venus Williams 6–3 7–5. Caroline finished the season ranked 60th in the world.

At the 2008 Australian Open, she defeated Gisela Dulko, Alyona Bondarenko and Sabine Lisicki to reach the fourth round before she lost to fourth-seeded and eventual runner up Ana Ivanović (6–1, 7–6). Wozniacki then made back to back quarter final appearances losing to Maria Sharapova in Doha and Lindsay Davenport in Memphis.

At the 2008 French Open she was seeded thirtieth, the first time she had been seeded at a Grand Slam event. She made the third round where she again lost in straight sets to Ana Ivanović. At Wimbledon she also made the third round before being defeated by second seed Jelena Janković 2–6, 6–4, 6–2.

In August at the Nordic Light Open in Stockholm she won her first WTA tournament, without losing a single set, crushing Vera Dushevina of Russia 6-0 6-2 in the final. Later that month she won her second at New Haven. In the final she beat world no. 11, Anna Chakvetadze, 3–6, 6–4, 6–1.

Caroline was the 21st seed at the U.S Open making the fourth round with relative ease dropping just 3 games in each of her first two matches. In round 3 she defeated world no. 14, Victoria Azarenka, 6–4, 6–4. In round 4 she lost against second seed and eventual runner-up Jelena Janković 3–6, 6–2, 6–1.

In the Tier III tournament AIG Japan Open Wozniacki was the top seed for the first time on the WTA Tour. She lived up to it, losing only one set on her way to the final where she beat Kaia Kanepi of Estonia 6–2, 3–6, 6–1, her third WTA singles title of the year. In her last WTA tournament of the year she reached the final at Luxembourg, but lost against top seed Elena Dementieva in a close three-setter; 2–6, 6–4, 7–6(4). She finished the year at a career high ranking of 12th.
